Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 Review

With the summer season coming up, a new set of movies is taking the spotlight. There are a couple of big blockbusters in the release schedule, and I will probably see one or two of them. The movie I’m reviewing now was not one of those summer hits; it was only made because a big audience would see it during the holiday season. I will do my best to explain why I did not like the final movie in the Twilight saga.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 is the continuation of the last book Stephanie Meyer wrote in the tragic tale of love between human and vampire, but you are not missing much. The whole series involves protagonist Bella romancing the vampire Edward and flirting with werewolf Jacob on the side. In the previous movie Edward and Bella got married, and Bella was turned into a vampire so she could give birth to a half human half vampire daughter. Now that Bella is a vampire all dramatic tension is gone. At first Bella may have blood lust for humans, but she overcomes it easily because she is special. I learned from this movie that vampires have the ability to get superpowers like how Edward can read minds; he was attracted to Bella because she could shield herself from his powers. I somehow accept this more readily than vampires being able to walk in daylight while sparkling. Bella’s father is fine with the arrangement; he just gets freaked out when Jacob strips to show Bella’s father that werewolves exist. Also relevant is that Jacob, who thought he was in love with Bella, tells her and Edward that he was actually attracted to Bella’s daughter, who ages rapidly but is still a small child during most of the movie. Thus the male eye candy is given a creepy edge to match Edward’s desire to hang around high school students even though he is much older. Additionally a bunch of superpowered vampires are introduced from around the world, and I have no idea if they were in the previous books, but it ultimately does not matter to the plot.
In fact the only reason to see this movie ends up horribly disappointing. Now that Bella has a child, a secret society of vampires wants to confront Edward’s family because children turned into vampires cannot control their blood lust and must be destroyed. Therefore, one of Edward’s relatives with precognition learns that the society will walk out to the middle of a frozen field facing off against Edward, Bella, their vampire friends, and their werewolf friends. The fight scene following is great because characters I didn’t particularly learn much about get horribly murdered by decapitation, immolation, and falling into a crevasse as the earth splits below. It’s like all of the previous conflicts were leading up to this one event, except it was not because in the end the antagonists get to walk away. I leave you to find out how they do it, or maybe you should not bother and check out the more banal book. I only went to see the movie for the one action scene, and the person I went with apparently did not see the big brawl coming. I would applaud the movie makers for straying from the source material if I knew more about it. I know at least that the fight scene kept my attention better than people sitting around talking, the majority of the movie by far.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 is the last movie in the Twilight Saga, and I think it should stay that way. The characters are uninteresting, the plot goes nowhere, and little effort goes into directing scenes to make the audience think that there’s a point to all the sitting around and talking. If you did not read the books, this movie will not explain anything for you. I recommend playing a drinking game in which something awkwardly creepy or unexpected happens in the movie. Imbibe a non-alcoholic beverage like I did at the movie theater, and you will not need to worry about passing out drunk.
